We were lucky enough to visit the Margaret Mahy Family Playground while visiting family in Christchurch for Christmas. I had heard so much about this playground so was expecting something spectacular and boy was I was impressed! This playground has it all and you can tell how popular it is by the large number of squealing children running around. I took my 3 year old daughter and had my 2 nieces (aged 10 and 12) with me.
The playground opened in December 2015 and is the largest playground is the southern hemisphere. It cost $3 million to build and is named after New Zealand’s famous children’s author. The park is made up of four distinct zones – the peninsula zone, forest zone, wetlands zone and plains zone.
This colourful playground has the biggest slide in the country (4m wide), a double flying fox, a large sandpit, climbing webs, the coolest splash pad with water cannons, the tallest spiral slide, tunnels, swing bridges, trampolines, climbing towers, swings, see-saws, merry-go-rounds and so much more. There is also a BBQ area, picnic tables, toilet facilities, food carts and a place to buy your coffee. It is a fantastic playground and a great day out for the entire family. We will definitely be back!
